Mobile Learning

Most mobile learning initiatives to date have focused on content and media to “fancy” devices like PDA’s, Blackberry’s, iPhones and iPods, but Kalleo Learning has proven already that mobile learning opportunities can be made available to practically any mobile phone from a R250 entry level mobile phone to a brand new iPhone.
Let us help you answer some of the questions you may have about Mobile Learning.
Mobile Learning... What is Mobile Learnig?
“Mobile learning is learning that takes place when the learner takes advantage of learning opportunities offered by mobile technology”
To simplify that, Kalleo Learning’s mobile learning offering allows any user to access mobile content from any *WAP enabled cellphones, anywhere in the world at any given time.
*WAP = this is the most basic form of internet access available on 95% of cellphones manufactured after the year 2000.
When most people hear about learning on a cellphone, their first reaction is “The screen is too small!” or “Can I do that?” The answer to both those questions is YES you can do that and NO, the screen is not too small – if you use “Mobile Learning” for the right things, that is.
Why Mobile Learnig ?
Mobile learning in Africa is a lifeline when compared to Europe and the USA, we have somewhat leapfrogged the technology adoption matrix and skipped right past Laptops and Desktop PC’s.
We have moved straight into the mobile arena for obvious financial reasons (an entry level laptop costs 10x as much as an entry level mobile phone). Picture an injured person in a rural area 15km from the nearest hospital or medical assistance, now imagine this individual having access to a mobile first aid guide containing over 600 pages with images and instructions, this content could save a persons life, or at the least equip them with the knowledge to support their injuries until they can receive medical treatment.THIS IS THE POWER OF MOBILE LEARNING.
On a lighter note, mobile learning provides benefits to many users in the all types of industries, Specifically staff that are on the road constantly and usually short of connectivity via laptop/desktop. For these users mobile learning proves especially useful, if not a necessity.
Technicians experiencing a problem for the first time at a client can open up their mobile glossary and troubleshoot the issue in real-time without the logistical complications of going back to the office to get further advice.
Online collaboration is even possible with today’s technology and Kalleo offers this to all its mobile learning clients.
Groups of users can be created and these users can use the instant messaging feature in our application to collaborate and bounce ideas off of one another in a secure environment without outside interference.
Imagine a sales team using the collaboration tool, a salesperson receives an objection from a client that he has not encountered before, he opens up his mobile, posts a short description to the rest of the sales team, and he then receives a few responses from more experienced salespeople telling him how to handle such an objection. This sort of support is priceless and was not available until NOW!!!
At Kalleo we realise that mobile learning is not the “be all and end all” of learning, it has it’s niches where it can be used very effectively, we promote a more blended approach and can integrate the m-learning system with any e-learning/hr system available, thus allowing easy administering of learning content/facilitator lead training from one platform.
Maybe a cellphone is not the right medium to learn how to drive a forklift truck, but it can be used most effectively for:

Mobile Learning in Marketing
Mobile Learning in CSI and CSR
Mobile Learning can be used very successfully for CSI/CSR initiatives around the world.
Recently we ran a project together with the Kauffman Foundation, where we combined Sports and Science and taught learners at large sporting events about how Science is represented in Sports, learners participated using their mobile phones and the learner to answer correctly in the shortest time won a prize, eg. Shirts signed by famous sports celebrities etc.
The project got thousands of youth to mobilise and interact using their own mobile devices, while being educational it was also a lot of fun for users.
Similar projects can be created to address serious issues such as HIV/AIDS, TB, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, etc.
Please feel free to contact us if you have an interest in a mobile learning CSI project.
